MR microscopy is creatively applied as an analytical technique over a wide range of consumer products to gain mechanistic understanding, mimic consumer use, develop models, and support claims. We develop methods to visualize fluid flow through materials, characterize skin and hair morphology and mechanics, and study product dissolution and interactions with water. Results provide mechanistic understanding and inform the development of models which guide innovation through upstream and downstream research efforts. Product efficacy and relevant consumer-use testing inspire and support claims and artwork. Studies are conducted on Bruker 4.7T horizontal and 11.7T vertical bore systems equipped with an SK380 gradient with 25cm quadrature transmit/receive coil and mic40 gradient with variable size RF coil inserts.

Water interaction is a key consumer use factor for many consumer products. Therefore, we apply 4D-MRI to study the interaction of water with materials over time and discover the impact of hydration on structure using rapid imaging with refocused echoes (RARE) and zero echo-time (ZTE) imaging methods. Substrate structure and function are also primary drivers of consumer acceptance. Much of this work requires inventions of consumer relevant sample manipulation equipment and creative experimental design to answer the key technical questions and guide the innovation process. We recognize the power of MR microscopy to contribute unique measurement capabilities to these challenges and will continue to grow our internal expertise and seek strategic external partners to expand our capabilities.
